Video transcript:

00:00 - 11:20

SG Jan Egeland walks through the ruins of a destroyed building in Khan Younis, Gaza, where Ali and his family, including three young children, currently live. Ali and his family reside on the fourth floor of the bombed-out apartment complex. They’ve improvised makeshift stairs to navigate through the rubble and reach their home. The floors and walls are riddled with large holes. Ali explained, “We have fled for our lives too many times. It’s better to stay here, at home, even if it’s in ruins.”

11:20 – 16:20

SG Jan Egeland continues walking through Deir Al Balah, speaking with displaced families sheltering in emergency tents. He meets Ammani, who lives in a single tent with her seven children, her mother, her disabled father, and her aunt along with her aunt’s children. In total, 18 people share the tent, sleeping side by side each night. They arrived two weeks ago from a Gaza City suburb that had endured intense violence and destruction.
