Notes:
8-year-old Derek is buying pens and books with his mother in a shop in San Pedro Sula, as he prepares to reintegrate into school. NRC provides vouchers of 700 lempira (around 30 dollars) to children who have been out of school for more than six months and whose families cannot afford tuition costs. The empowering moment when the child is given the opportunity of choosing his own school equipment is part of a broader programme which includes a case-by-case assessment of needs, visits to the homes of the children to build their confidence and motivation, and to build trust and understanding with parents. The aim is to limit repeated school drop-out and to retain children in the education system.
