Jan Egeland speaks with a school student at the Instituto Patria in La Lima, close to San Pedro Sula in Honduras.
Notes:
The school was founded in 1957, and today counts 1,346 children and offers evening courses for parents. It was heavily damaged in 2020 during the Eta and Iota hurricanes. In the aftermath of the natural disasters, the school buildings were also used as emergency shelters, causing further deteriorations. NRC supported the school with the rehabilitation of infrastructures, especially sanitation, the creation of a space for the management of solid waste and the training of teachers in didactic skills.
“Our needs are multiple. After the hurricanes and after being used as a shelter, the school’s infrastructure was strongly damaged. From a pedagogical point of view, we also need equipment, such as computers and technical equipment, as the school will become a technical college.
Jasmin:
“We don’t have the necessary resources to improve the condition of the school.”
“The school is a shelter center, it houses between 500 to 1000 people, the water level rose to half, the second floor was used as a shelter, and we need to improve the conditions. This place should have the right conditions for people to be well, because the first thing is to safeguard lives”.
