Jan Egeland listens to the testimony of a woman who has been affected by violence, and is now receiving support from NRC.
Notes:
Honduras is one of the most violent countries of the world, with record high homicide and feminicide rates. NRC provides support to persons forced to flee because of violence and threats to life. NRC’s protection programme saves lives while guaranteeing the anonymity of impacted people and helping them recover their autonomy and livelihoods in complex situations.
Some of the persons supported by NRC needed to flee because their land was grabbed, or because their relatives were kidnapped or killed, or because they refused to let their children be recruited into criminal gangs. Many of them receive threats and must leave all behind in only 24 hours. For many of them the only option is to take the migratory route towards the United States, crossing the border up to three times before being caught and deported back to Honduras. All along the route they face, once again, threats and violence.
“The gangs tried to recruit my 13th year old son, and I told him: if you join them, you only can expect dead or prison.”
“I had never thought to migrate, but I felt so trapped that I took the decision to leave the country”
