Olha and Sasha, Liubomirivka, Mykolaiv
Olha and Sasha, both in their forties, live in Liubomyrivka, a village in Mykolaiv region, South Ukraine. They used to be agriculture employees in Posad Prokrovske.
“Now the land is mined. So we cannot work anymore. We live only on the IDP allowance, it is not enough to provide for both of us. Before this invasion, we had a garden and vegetables, but last year, we could not grow anything, because of mines. Deminers came so we hope that this year we will have vegetables”, Sasha explained.
Olha and Sasha both left in the first months of the full-scale invasion. Olha spent 4 months at her relatives in Western Ukraine. Sasha waited until June 2022 to leave the village and went to Mykolaiv. Both came back in January 2023. “We decided to come back, because it is our village, our home”. Upon return, they found the house without any roof and windows. “When I came back, I found unexploded pieces of missiles around. The deminers helped us to clean”, Sasha explained. NRC supported them to rebuild the roof of their house.
Today, the main challenge for them is access to work.
